Alexander and Mabel Bell are two of Cape Breton Island’s most cherished legends.

Mabel Hubbard Bell is said to have been 100 years ahead of her time. She was an early adopter of using nature for nature, naturalizing her estate gardens, protecting plants from extreme weather elements, and creating supportive environments for pollinators. She held a strong belief that local matters – that biodiversity matters.

Alexander Graham Bell is one of the most important inventors in the history of the world. Although he is best known as the inventor of the first practical telephone, he also did innovative work in other fields, including aeronautics, hydrofoils and wireless communication (the “photophone”). Moreover, Bell himself considered his work with the deaf to be his most important contribution.
